Kangaroo Care

...isn't just practiced at the Sidney Zoo.
The folks at Children's are big believers in it. In short, mother or father sits holding a prematurely born child towards his/her chest for extended periods of time. The heat absorbed from the parent serves the same purpose as the incubator. The skin contact works to establish a bond between parent and child (I'm sure it can get lonely in the incubator) and baby learns to recognize the parent's smell, voice, etc. Proponents of Kangaroo Care point to all sorts of benefits to the child (see the link to the article below). Intuitively, it makes sense. Not to mention the enjoyment the parent gets out of it!

We were introduced to it for the first time today. Ericka & I found it absolutely delightful. Mathias instantly fell asleep and didn't have much to say.

Hi Patrik and Ericka,
You certainly do have a Little Prince!! He is beautiful! I suppose handsome might be a better choice for a little boy, but until he complains, I think he's beautiful! He looks perfectly content doing his Kangaroo care. I'm glad you're at Children's - you couldn't be in a better place. I know that from personal experience. I love the updates - will keep in touch via those. Happy Kangarooing!

Hey Guys,
Wow - what a week! Mathias, you've come so far - first showing up (just a bit early), then removing the tube, then removing the light, and now you've moved on to kangarooing, what a wild ride! The pictures are great and I don't know Ericka, but I'm kinda partial to the snazzy green hat one - of course the ones with the parents are great too! It has to be the most wonderful feeling to be able to have more contact with the sweet little guy. Thinking of you all always - We love you and can't wait to meet the burrito boy!

Take care and we will be in touch.

Hej hela familjen

Stort grattis till veckojubiléet! Han ser fantastisk ut i sin mössa. Nästa storlek blir väl Blå/Vit i Leksands färger.
Som "gammelfaster" - hu vad gammalt det låter - så följer jag bloggen regelbundet med stort intersse. Det var en fantastisk idé med ständiga uppdateringar.

Lycka till med den lilla kängurun.

Hi again Ronnings!

Such a warm fuzzy to see you actually getting to hold your own baby boy. Nothing quite like that experience. Would love to see you sometime - have a few welcoming gifts for little Mathias. Not certain what the best method is for reaching you since I know you're spending so much time with him at the hospital, so I'll start here!

Congratulations!!!
I am a co-worker of Rob's at school. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter that was born at 26.5 weeks. She weighed in at 2lbs. 5 oz. and 14 inches long. So I have been in your shoes. I would be happy to help in anyway possible.

Judging from the pictures and updates that I read you have come so far already. I know that the road seems so long, but looking back it was just a short time.

Do as much kangaroo care as possible. It is great for you and Mathais.

Hej igen!

Kram igen,
Jessica & Co

Hey Ericka & Patrik
This is Brandy's Mom, I can tell you I think things look great!! You know Brandy was born 32 years ago at 2 pounds 7 oz an wasn't given that great of a chance, but look at her now! I have been checking in on your site and Things look great for your little guy, My dad used to say he sent up a lot of blue smoke (prayers) for Brandy and it must of helped so I'm doing the same for you, Love to you all...
