Approaching warp speed

The wine box was quickly relegated to the back burner with the arrival of a new set of wheels.
This is the one that arrived on his birthday but required assembly so it went into service a few days later.
As of yet, M barely reaches down to the floor when sitting on it so it is purely powered by parental back muscles. Asteroids ahead!

Spring has sprung

After a long winter of being cooped up indoors, the snow finally is melting. And we're venturing outside. First stop: they playground.

At the age of one there aren't all that many amenities of which you can take advantage. We did however find a swing geared towards the smaller set.

M found it very entertaining.
Especially with mommy pushing!
I'm sure we'll making regular visits.

A hard week's night

Finally Friday!

It was a long week in M's neighborhood!

  • Papa was out of town a couple of days
  • Mama had to work late a couple of nights -M got to spend a day at Nanny's house. That was fun!
  • We had our 1-year hospital check-up complete with shots (several), blood test (ouch), and a weigh-in (very little gained). Otherwise, he had a good bill of health.
  • We also had a ear-nose-throat check-up that had to be started with ear wax removal (nobody likes that). He still had fluids behind his ear drums. If it isn't gone in six weeks tubes are going in (he won't like that and his mother won't either!).

Tomorrow we're sleeping in!

Reunion

In a belated birthday celebration we returned to Children's Hospital to say hello and spread some cheesecake. As luck would have it, our daytime primary nurse was working so we got to catch up with her. M O'Malley, in his March 17th finest, seemed a bit subdued. Maybe there was a feeling of deja vu in the air.

Today is the day! Happy 1st birthday!

We tried cake a second time. He didn't like it today either.
Curious George was a hit though.

As was the aquarium (no real fish included).
The big box came some-assembly-required and daddy and M were both too tired on Wednesday night.
Party On!

In the spirit of pre-maturity we celebrated Mathias's birthday Sunday afternoon.

Grandpa Charlie was in town for the occasion.
And a big group of his friends came over to celebrate.

M also sampled his first piece of cake (and thereby his first sweet of any kind).
It was chocolate to boot!

It didn't go over so well.
Sorry Monsons, he's one of us!

In spite of all the commotion (and a daylight savings time adjustment to top it all off) M held up quite well. In fact the only tears that were shed that day were from Deanne when M bit her nose. The word on the street is that she had it coming...
Thanks to everyone who stopped by! Mathias would love to hear from you. Please feel free to send him a birthday greeting via the comments. We'll be sure to read them to him!

Tonight is exactly one year since Ericka was hospit-alized.

In fact at this very hour we were waiting for the ambulance to take her from Waconia to Abbott (I got to meander the streets of south Minneapolis on my own). The alert level had just been upgraded from 'wonder what's going on?' to 'you're likely having a baby!'.
Enter the fog!

It's pretty amazing how time flies.

Object permanence

There was a time in your life when the expression out of sight out of mind was literally true. Things were simple then! And the world was small.

Then one day it's all clear: "Hey, just because you put the telephone behind your back doesn't mean that it doesn't exists! In fact, I'm going to go get it..."

The other day we woke up to the realization that M is now much more persistent with the objects he want to get his hands on (and stick in his mouth). Enter object permanence.
Parenting just got harder!

A sweet ride

In spite of his one-year birthday being imminent, M isn't ready to operate any form of vehicle.

That doesn't preclude him from being a passenger!

In an improvised sports coupe - courtesy of Trader Joe's - we've been cruising around the house, chasing mom and the cats. No wheels, no doors, no pedals, no steering wheel, but a boatload of fun!

If you ever had a hankering for a career providing the horsepowerage for such a doohickey:
-It is an unpaid, yet highly rewarding job
-Anyone schooled in ergonomics will cringe at the working position (as will you when you try to straighten out your back after a few laps around the house).

Vroom, Vroom!

On the scale

Our traveling nurse stopped by Friday for last shots of the 2006-2007 RSV season. Part of the routine is the weighing to figure out how big of a dose to deliver. In the past month, M has gained a less-than-spectacular 3 ounces (100g). Ordinarily, we'd be looking at a half to one pound per month of weight gain... But given his activity levels lately it may be progress that he's gaining any weight at all!
The limited weight gain didn't affect the Synegis dose spilling over into two shots - one for each leg. M was not amused.
